J. Miller Flats

94 Charles Street, Boston

OVERVIEW

J. Miller Flats is one of BREC’s earliest hospitality projects. The building was originally built as a model townhome to help sell homes like it on the newly infilled “Back Bay”. After that it was owned by Joseph Miller and family for over 100 years - hence the name J. Miller Flats - before eventually being acquired and converted to a 9 room bed and breakfast called the Charles Street Inn. BREC purchased the building in 2013 and converted the over-sized guestrooms into apartment hotel units designed for families and extended stay travelers. At the time, apartment hotel units were still an emerging trend in hospitality and BREC helped legitimize them by educating stakeholders and assisting in the drafting of regulations and zoning ordinances in Boston. The original historical details of the building that were still intact from the 1800s when we purchased the building were restored in our renovation and are celebrated as part of the story and brand of J. Miller Flats. 94 Charles Street is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
